A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the sunlight from hitting a certain part of the earth. There are four different types of solar eclipses, total eclipses, partial eclipses, annular eclipses, and hybrid eclipses. A total eclipse happens when the moon completely covers the sun. For a solar eclipse to take place the moon must be a new moon. Full eclipses are much rarer than partial or annular, because of the fact that in a full eclipse the moon has to perfectly line up with the sun, but with a partial or annular it only covers up some of the sun.
