Sinkholes are essentially just a hole in the ground caused by a fault or collapse in the surface layer. These sinkholes’ diameter can be anywhere from one meter to over 500 meters wide. They can form very quickly or over time but no matter what they can be found anywhere worldwide. A sinkhole can be caused by many components including surface drainage, droughts, and also can be the top of a cave when there isn’t much matter between the surface and the top of the cave. The largest known sinkhole is called Quattara Depression and is located in northwestern Egypt, and measures 80 kilometers long and 120 kilometers wide. This large pit is filled with sludge-like quicksand and is extremely dangerous because of its size and isolation from help.
