A cinder cone, also known as a scoria cone, is basically just loose sediment, volcanic ash, and other rock built up around a volcanic vent. The look of this sculpture is a slanted circle, surrounding the volcanic vent, with usually a small crater at the top. When a cinder cone erupts, rather than slowly oozing lava out of the cylindrical vent, the pressure builds up until it blows which causes a very violent eruption spewing lava and debris everywhere.
